The school continues to expand the School Adoption Program to students in various levels with the objective of educating them in financial planning.

Activities organized in 2010

1. Prize Presentation Ceremony for Buku Wang Saku, Essay Writing and Scrap Book Competitions

A prize presentation ceremony was held on 27 September 2010 for the Buku Wang Saku Competition, Essay Writing Competition and the 2010 Scrap Book Contest. The prize presentation ceremony was conducting at the school assembly area.

The Buku Wang Saku Competition was held from 31 January 2010 to 31 August 2010. The competition was created to inculcate prudent financial management practices amongst primary and secondary school students. There were a total of 14 winning entries from the students. Each winner was presented with an exclusive thermo flask from Uni.Asia Life.

The Essay Writing Competition and Scrap Book Contest were concurrently launched on 24 May 2010 and ended on 21 June 2010.

The Essay Writing Competition was divided into two categories; Category 1 - Upper Secondary Category (Form 4 - 6) and Category 2 - Lower Secondary Category (Form 1 - 3). Category 1 students were invited to write a 350 word essay on ‘Discuss The Importance Of Financial Planning For Your Future’, while Category 2 students had to write a 150-200 word essay titled, “Describe How The ‘Buku Wang Saku’ Has Enabled You To Plan Your Spending.”

Lower Secondary (Form 1 - 3)

The Scrap Book Contest was a group competition – each group consisted of between two to four students. The contest topic was, ‘Insurans Dan Kepentingannya’ (Insurance And Its Importance). Students were divided into the same two categories as the Essay Writing Competition; Category 1 (Form 4 - 6) and Category 2 (Form 1 - 3).

For all competitions, a Certificate of Participation was given to every student who had participated.

2. Educational Visit to FRIM

On 10 July 2010, 40 students accompanied by three teachers from Kelab Pencinta Alam dan Sains Sosial of Methodist Girls School participated in an educational visit to the Forest Research Institute (FRIM). The objective of the visit was to increase environmental awareness as well as to cultivate and promote the culture of environmental conservation amongst the students.

The students departed from the school at 8.15 a.m. and arrived at approximately 9.00 a.m. at FRIM. There, FRIM wildlife and conservation officers greeted them before they were given a short briefing. Next on the visit itinerary was a short ‘Nature Study and Canopy Walk’ program that lasted about two hours. This program opened their eyes to the importance of environmental conservation and the impact it has on future generations. The program was over by 11.30 a.m. and the students and teachers then had a picnic by the waterfall in FRIM before leaving at 12.15 p.m.

The educational visit was a great success as the students had fun as well as received invaluable knowledge on the environment.

3. Visit to Uni.Asia Life

In conjunction with the Methodist Girls School’s Academic Week 2010, the school organized a visit to Uni.Asia Life’s head office on 30 June 2010. The Methodist Girls School group consisted of 35 students from Form 4 and 13 members of Kelab Kewangan Pelajar Sekolah (KKPS) were accompanied by 2 teachers.

The students arrived at Uni.Asia Life head office at 9.40 a.m. and were welcomed by Mr. Raymond Lew, Chief Officer of Bancassurance & Alternative Distribution followed by a presentation on Uni.Asia Life’s corporate background and history from Mr. Abdul Latiff Puteh, Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications. This was followed by a forum on career development in a life insurance company by a panel of several department representatives from Actuarial, Sales & Marketing, Finance, Information Technology, Human Resources and Underwriting. A Q&A session was allocated to students who wanted to ask the panel questions on career opportunities in the life insurance industry.

4. Visit to Zoo Negara with Orphans from Rumah Bakti

On 26 June 2010, Methodist Girls School organized a visit to Zoo Negara with 30 orphans from Rumah Bakti, Selangor. The purpose of this visit was to instill empathy for the less fortunate amongst the students and to give the school children and the orphans an opportunity to experience the joy of a visit to the zoo.

The event was a memorable one for all involved as they were taken on a tour of Zoo Negara by tram and witnessed many wildlife related shows. In addition to this, the students and orphans also participated in a few fun-filled indoor activities.

5. Motivational & Career Talk

On 25 June 2010, a total of 157 students from the Methodist Girls School were given an engaging motivational and career talk by Mr. Casey Tee of Focus Training & Consulting. This program was part of the Methodist Girls School’s Academic Week 2010 with the objective of motivating students who would be sitting for their SPM and STPM examinations and to enlighten the students on the importance of these public examinations as a stepping stone towards their future careers.

The talk that lasted almost two hours had a deep impact on the students as the delivery was inspiring and the presentation visuals were very engaging.
